Biography

Irwansyah, Ph.D., often known as Jemi, is a lecturer in the Department of Political Science, FISIP Universitas Indonesia. He earned his doctoral degree from the Asia Research Center, Murdoch University, with a dissertation discussing labor mobilization and the politics of production in Indonesia. His research interests lie in political economy, with a specific focus on labor politics, urban politics, and ecological politics. In his academic activities, Irwansyah teaches various courses such as Urban Politics, Labor Politics and Industrial Relations, as well as Globalization and Politics in Indonesia. Much of his research focuses on power relations in the social relations of production, forms of worker or citizen resistance, and policy implications for social justice and the fulfillment of labor or citizens’ rights. In addition to his academic work, Irwansyah is active in the Campus Workers Union (SPK) and currently serves as Chairman of the Universitas Indonesia Workers Association. Furthermore, he actively collaborates with the visual arts collective Ruang Rupa in several writings, research, and artwork productions. Beyond academia, Jemi is also actively engaged in social and cultural activism, collaborating with visual art collectives such as Ruang Rupa (Jakarta) and Riwanua (Makassar)—authoring publications, facilitating research and writing workshops, speaking at events, and contributing to artistic productions.
