The event was officially opened by Dr. phil. Panji Anugrah Permana, Head of the UI FISIP Political Science Department, who in his address emphasized the importance of expanding the space for academic dialogue to address contemporary political challenges. He stated that the three main themes of the conference\u2014oligarchy, digitalization, and climate crisis\u2014are strategic issues that intersect and are highly relevant to the dynamics of democracy both in Indonesia and globally.<\/p>\n

This conference is part of a series of scientific forums organized by the UI Political Science Department that will run until the end of the year. The full-day event was held in parallel across various rooms, including three thematic panel sessions, an Alumni Talk Session, and a Discussion and Plenary Session for Conference Participants. The three major conference themes reflect the dynamics of Indonesian and global democracy in facing the challenges of oligarchy, digital technology development, and the climate crisis.<\/p>\n

The Alumni Talk Session, held parallel to the panel sessions, featured a number of key figures from diverse academic and professional backgrounds, including Prof (Riset) Dr. Lili Romli, M.Si. (Principal Researcher at BRIN), Dr. Eddy Soeparno, S.H., M.H. (Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian People’s Consultative Assembly\/MPR RI), and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ujang Komarudin, M.Si. (Principal Expert at the Indonesian Government Communication Agency). In his presentation, Dr. Eddy Soeparno highlighted the urgency of addressing the climate crisis and the dynamics of drafting the Climate Change Management Bill, which is currently being prepared by the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI). He stressed the importance of intensive public opinion involvement in the discussion process, which is planned to commence in early 2026.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Discussion and Plenary Session for Conference Participants featured speakers with expertise in politics, public policy, and political communication: Prof. Dr. Amalinda Savirani, S.IP., M.A. (Head of the UGM Political Science Doctoral Program), Ika Idris, Ph.D. (Associate Professor of Public Policy and Management, Monash University Indonesia), and Irwansyah, S.IP., M.A., Ph.D. (Lecturer at the UI Political Science Department). All three previously served as panelists in the three main thematic sessions.<\/p>\n

Both sessions were moderated by Riaty Raffiudin, Ph.D., Head of the UI Political Science Postgraduate Program, who guided the discussion by highlighting the interrelation between academic research, public policy, and practical political challenges in Indonesia.<\/p>\n

The various discussion sessions demonstrated how digitalization has become a new political space for the Indonesian public to re-examine democratic values, both in terms of implementation and the threats that accompany it. One prominent issue was the narrowing scope for civil society’s freedom of expression due to intervention by political elites and the application of ambiguous articles (rubber articles) in the ITE Law, which are deemed to potentially lead to repressive actions.<\/p>\n

Through this conference, the UI Political Science Department’s Postgraduate Program reaffirms its commitment to strengthening the tradition of scholarship and critical discourse among academics, researchers, and public policy practitioners. This forum is expected to become a collaborative platform for formulating ideas and solutions to various contemporary democratic challenges, while also encouraging the involvement of Indonesian political scientists in the global conversation concerning political governance, technology, and environmental sustainability.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
